INNOVATION
Equipping students for the future
As William Pollard once stated, “Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate change will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable.” This idea has shaped our foundation, putting students first by preparing them for the future.
Serving as an incubator of innovation.

Powerful initiatives for a better tomorrow.
This award-winning project is a pioneering step in having classrooms move away from obsolete text books, curating free, open-source curriculum and content. It is now a national model for the way public education is changing. Our foundation provided logistical and administrative support, and supplied teacher stipends including 58 iPads.
Discover the future.
The American Public Education Foundation partnered with the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) to position the public schools and public school students of Tennessee to be “future ready” through TSBA’s Tennessee Digital Resources Library (TDRL).
The goal was to create a replicable, national model that could be used across the U.S. to set a new standard for educational excellence across America. Preparing students for today’s digitally connected readies students to compete in today’s global economy world while inspiring their natural curiosity.
About TDRL: The Project – a partnership among TSBA, a technology innovator, the American Public Education Foundation, and leading Tennessee education groups – centers on educators’ vetting of open-source content to replace hard-cover textbooks across 14 high school courses, including Algebra I, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, English I, Geometry, World History, and more (a prototype for English III is in development).
Our Role: We provided logistical and administrative support, including sourcing of sponsors and funding of a part-time Project Coordinator.
Value: Replacing costly, often obsolete textbooks with curated open-source content allows limited district funds to be redirected toward infrastructure improvements or the purchase of iPads, laptops and tablets essential for 21st century teaching and learning.
Process: Trained teacher teams – 14 teams (68 teachers) – are curating open-source content. All content selected aligns to state standards.
